The "Why" Behind Balanced Family Academy: Becca Pahl on iHeart's "CEOs You Should Know"

Recently, our CEO and Co-founder, Becca Pahl, sat down with Boxer at iHeart Radio's "CEOs You Should Know" podcast to share the story of BFA. It's a story that likely resonates deeply with many of you – a story of motherhood, challenges, and the unwavering pursuit of balance.

The Beginning: A Mom's Mission

During her interview, Becca shares bits and pieces of her early life: leaving Chillicothe where she grew up, graduating business school, moving to California, and how her love of family ultimately brought her back to Columbus. Her next chapter began as she entered motherhood, alongside her two sisters. They quickly realized how difficult it was to juggle their careers with the search for childcare that truly "got it." It wasn't just about finding a place to watch their kids; it was about finding a partner in their parenting journey. This is where the seed for Balanced Family Academy was planted.

In the podcast, Becca recalls the early days, filled with the relatable struggles of new parents. "All of my friends and family are like, 'of course you guys are in need of childcare and you just go start a business to fulfill that need,'" she shared with a laugh. But it wasn't just a business idea; it was a mission to create a place that offered true support for families.

Growing With Columbus

The sister’s vision quickly took root. What started as a solution for her own family blossomed into something much bigger. In the podcast, she recounts the whirlwind of opening their first location, filling up in months, and the almost immediate demand for more space. This initial success fueled their expansion, leading to multiple locations and eventually the decision to franchise. Becca shares how important it was to protect the BFA brand and ensure that the same passion and commitment to quality were present in each new school. Today, Balanced Family Academy has grown into a family of 18 schools throughout Central Ohio, united by a common purpose.

What Makes Balanced Family Academy Different?

Becca's interview offers a peek into the heart of Balanced Family Academy, revealing the "secret sauce" that makes us more than just a daycare. It's a blend of thoughtful intention and genuine care, woven into the fabric of our daily interactions.

Balance as a Core Value

Becca often returns to the theme of balance in the interview, and it's clear that it's a guiding principle for BFA. It's not just in our name; it's in our actions. She speaks about understanding the daily pressures faced by parents and wanting to alleviate those burdens. This is reflected in our all-inclusive approach – providing meals, diapers, and wipes, so parents have one less thing to worry about at the beginning and end of a long work day. Even extracurricular activities are offered onsite, recognizing the value of parents' time.

Building a Community of Support

But beyond the tangible offerings, there's an emphasis on something less concrete but equally powerful: community. Becca's voice warms as she shares stories of connection, recalling parents who met when their children were infants at BFA and now vacation together. It's clear that BFA strives to be a place where families find not just childcare, but also a network of support, a place where they belong.

Our “Going the Extra Mile” Mentality

The interview also highlights BFA's willingness to go the extra mile. This was perhaps most evident during the pandemic, and Becca recounts the creative solutions BFA implemented to continue supporting families. From creating in-home learning "pods" to delivering curriculum and meals, BFA demonstrated a commitment to being a reliable partner, no matter the circumstances. It's this "we're in this together" spirit that truly defines the BFA ethos.

Investing in the Heart of BFA: Our Teachers

Throughout the conversation, Becca underscores the value of BFA teachers. She firmly believes that their well-being directly impacts the children in their care. "If they are in a good spot and have what they need and are set up for success," she explains, "then our kids are going to be set up for success. " This philosophy is evident in BFA's emphasis on creating a positive and supportive work environment.

Our Story Continues With You

Becca's story is the heart of Balanced Family Academy, but it doesn't end there. It's a story that continues to be written with each child who learns and grows within our walls, with every family who finds support and connection here, and with every teacher who dedicates their passion and energy to nurturing young minds. We see ourselves as partners in your family's journey, and we're committed to providing a place where children thrive and families feel supported. As Becca said, it's about "supporting every child, every teacher, every family, every single day".
